I read. I obsessively wear headphones and pace around to weird music. I also compose music for quirky and pretentious indie films and write album reviews. I tend to like fiction that incorporates surrealist elements, but I'm really into any writing that makes me forget where I am and puts me into some unfamiliar place. I'm also a big fan of philosophy that doesn't read like philosophy and creatively written nonfiction. Here are a few examples:

This is a fascinating philosophical description of America from the point of view of an outsider--in this case, a leading postmodern philosopher. Focusing on NYC, LA, Salt Lake City, and a number of other major U.S. cities, Baudrillard makes intriguing observations about what sets us apart from our European counterpoints: what we value, why we do what we do, etc. While incredibly deep and insightful, the book is a great coffee table piece--easy to pick up, read a chapter, and set back down again. Beautifully written, very accessible, and absolutely fascinating.

"Beneath the Underdog" is a fascinating and philosophically charged autobiographical account of Charles Mingus' early years. Taking the reader through his insecurities and inspirations, Mingus' self portrait allows a glimpse into the psyche of a tortured musician who would go on to become one of America's most important 20th century composers. The book reads like Beat literature in all of its juiciness: sex, drugs, and smoke filled rooms occupied by jamming jazz greats Art Tatum and Charlie Parker. A must read for any Mingus fan!

An utterly fascinating read, "The Dancing Wu Li Masters," is a book about quantum physics for those of us without backgrounds in math and science. Reading more like philosophy than physics, Gary Zukav draws intriguing parallels between quantum physics and Eastern philosophy/religion. My mind was blown every couple of pages as I was reminded of my significance/insignificance against the infinite backdrop of the universe
