This is the first photography project, and it occurred to me very organically, that I self-identified as a female photographer. It is not common that a woman creates a body of work around lowriding. Since the inception of the automobile, car culture of all kinds has been dominated by the male perspective. Making pictures as a woman in a space traditionally defined by men, and of a practice traditionally used to represent masculinity, places my work in tension with the prevailing depictions. I feel it took a woman photographer to break through this mold and offer a new story.

—Kristin Bedford

Sometimes it takes a woman. Known for her quiet portraits of American cultural movements, Los Angeles-based photographer Kristin Bedford’s new work, Cruise Night, is an intimate and un-staged exploration of Los Angeles’ Mexican American lowrider car culture.

On Saturday, June 12th, 6:00–10:00 p.m. PST everyone is invited to a cruise night/Book Release for Cruise Night hosted by Just Memories Car Club and the Los Angeles lowrider community in El Monte. The event will feature over one hundred lowrider cars, great music and food, a raffle, and much more. Come see the people and community that made Bedford’s photography possible. (See flyer in highlights below for more information.)
