NADYA TOLOKONNIKOVA discusses her activism book READ & RIOT, with SHEPARD FAIREY

Read & Riot: A Pussy Riot Guide to Activism (HarperOne)

Feminist artist, political activist, and Pussy Riot founder Nadya Tolokonnikova has written a timely guide to radical protest and provides the words, actions, and inspiration to ignite the power of individuals to passionately resist and proactively plan our way to the change we want to see. In Read & Riot: A Pussy Riot Guide to Activism, the revered international activist draws upon her own hard-won wisdom to share her core principles for opposing leaders and governments that threaten to suppress individual rights and freedoms. Cutting through the pessimism, fear, uncertainty, and hopelessness, Read & Riot is an empowering tool for civil disobedience that encourages us to question the status quo, reject the litany of injustices and refuse to let apathy take hold, and above all, to make political action exciting, to be approached with a sense of humor, and an ultimately make it an integral part of our daily lives.  Fusing punk and positivity to create a culture of protest that inspires and connects us, Read & Riot includes actions, suggestions, and resources for creating an empowered movement of resistance.

Nadya Tolokonnikova is a conceptual artist and political activist from Russia and the founder of the art collective Pussy Riot. In 2012 she was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment following an anti-Putin performance in Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. Shortly after her release in 2013 Nadya created MediaZona, an independent Russian news service, and Zona Prava, a prisoners’ rights non-governmental organization. She has spoken before the US Congress, the British Parliament, and the European Parliament, and has lectured as an honorary speaker at Harvard, Cambridge, the Glastonbury music festival, to name a few, and is a Lennon Ono Grant for Peace recipient, and is a co-recipient of The Hannah Arendt Prize for Political Thought.

Shepard Fairey was born in Charleston, South Carolina. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island. In 1989 he created the “Andre the Giant has a Posse” sticker that transformed into the OBEY GIANT art campaign, with imagery that has changed the way people see art and the urban landscape. After 29 years, his work has evolved into an acclaimed body of art, which includes the 2008 "Hope" portrait of Barack Obama, found at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery. The artist collaborated with Amplifier in 2017 to create the We The People series recognizable during the Women’s Marches and other rallies around the world in defense of national and global social justice issues. Just recently Fairey teamed up with Amplifier again to launch We The Future, a campaign featuring young leaders from social change movements, working to address important issues and get art and supporting education tools into more than 20,000 classrooms. His works are in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, the Boston Institute of Contemporary Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and many others. The artist’s 2017 “Damaged” body of work was his largest-ever solo fine art exhibition and set record attendance for the opening as well as drawing an unprecedented number of visitors to the Los Angeles show. “Force Majeure” is Fairey’s most recent solo museum exhibition on view through November 4th at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art showcasing 400 artworks from throughout the artist’s career. Shepard Fairey is currently working on shows and murals globally and planning for the 30-year anniversary of the OBEY GIANT art campaign. For more information, visit
