RED HEN PRESS presents KIM DOWER & RON KOERTGE

Slice of Moon + The Ogre's Wife (Red Hen Press)

Join us tonight as one of LA's most beloved publishing houses presents a joint poetry reading by two of their upcoming fall authors.

Slice of Moon, the second poetry collection by Kim Dower, retains the whimsical, accessible style of her debut, Air Kissing on Mars, while reaching deeper, with greater lyrical intensity, irony, and poignancy. Losing one's mother in Bloomingdale's, the pleasures of corned beef, the power of bottled water, fear of freeways, hot springs, boob jobs, secrets in hotel rooms, dolphins sleeping with one eye open, wolves in garter belts, the strange lights next door, the people in the health food store who don't look healthy; Slice of Moon is simultaneously funny and profound, universal and personal, and examines a life well-lived. Drenched in vivid imagery, sparkling with surprise, each poem reminds us that our lives are filled with desire and mystery. - See more at: http://redhen.org/book/?uuid=C36F6A29-B110-304B-1CC8-8FC2FB4B90E9#sthash...

Ron Koertge wants to do nothing but delight. Armed with his trademark wit, his newest book of poems, The Ogre's Wife, introduces readers to Little Red Riding Hood all grown up with a fondness for salsa and chips, explores the thorny relationship of Jackie Robinson and Pee Wee Reese, spies a Trojan pony and the children it bamboozles, and offers an alternate reading to the Icarus story. He meets Walt Whitman on the set of an X-rated movie, attends his gardener's funeral, and goes to his beloved race track. Seminal figures from pop mythology speak up in unexpected ways: The Beast, transformed by Beauty, hints that his new life isn't exactly what he expected. Gretel enrolls in night school, the ogre's wife from the beanstalk yarn writes a heart-rending story on her cutting board, and a group of fourth-graders on a field trip encounters Death. Occasionally setting aside free verse, there are couplets about a Bette Davis movie, a sestina about routine blood tests, a villanelle set in a topless bar, and a set of haibun that chronicles an entire day. Reverend Ike and John Lennon said, "Whatever gets you through the night." This book will do just that and carry you right on in to the next day, guaranteed.

Praise for Slice of Moon:

"The poems are bold and sexy and smart."--Stephen Dunn, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet

""Slice of Moon" is a dark chocolate fever dream of love, of mothers. Kim Dower dares you into the dark. You may find yourself lurking there."--Erica Jong

"Kim Dower's remarkable first book, Air Kissing on Mars, was on fire. Slice of Moon burns even hotter, its flames rising even higher."--Thomas Lux

Praise for The Ogre's Wife:

What satisfies most are the transformative moments: a book sent through airport security emerges "like a young/ scholar, dozing in a weathered punt," and when one poem's speaker wears to bed an ordinary-looking hat he's been gifted, he finds that "in my dreams I don't take shit/ from nobody." VERDICT: A pleasure for any reader; in this collection, "the straw of the day, bushel after bushel of it, slowly/ turns to gold."--Barbara Hoffert, Library Journal

Kim Dower grew up in New York City and studied Creative Writing at Emerson College in Boston. Her first collection, Air Kissing on Mars, was published by Red Hen Press in 2010 and appeared on the Poetry Foundation’s Contemporary Best Sellers list. The Los Angeles Times described it as, “sensual and evocative lyrical snapshots of life’s bittersweet moments, seamlessly combining humor and heartache.” Kim’s work has appeared in Ploughshares, The Seneca Review, Barrow Street, Eclipse, and Two Hawks Quarterly. Two of the poems in Slice of Moon, her newest book of poems, were finalists for the Rattle Poetry Prize. Kim currently teaches in the B.A. Program at Antioch University, Los Angeles, and runs a literary publicity company called Kim-from-L.A. She lives in West Hollywood, California.

Ron Koertge is the author of a dozen books of poems.  The latest are from Red Hen Press--Indigo and Fever.  A recipient of grants from the NEA and the California Arts Council,  he is nevertheless reputed to not have a serious bone in his body.  When not writing poetry or fiction for Young Adults, he is an astute handicapper of thoroughbred race horses.
