Founded by Tavi Gevinson when she was 15, Rookie has paved the way for a new era of teen media as an online magazine made by and for teenagers (and their cohorts of any age). Since 2011, it has inspired millions of readers by honestly addressing the adolescent experience and empowering young people to tell their own stories. By examining the human experience through a teenage lens, Rookie hopes to make the enduring mysteries of being alive less confusing, or even kind of wonderful.
Rookie on Love has something for every heart:
- Writer, TV host, and activist Janet Mock advises on getting over a crush and into yourself in “How to Deal with Rejection”
- Jenny Zhang, author of the bestselling novel Sour Heart declares, “The way we talk about respect and teenage girls needs to change, in her essay “Beyond Self-Respect.”
- Bestselling author and indie bookstore owner Emma Straub (The Vacationers) writes a tribute to the way words move their readers in “Book Love.”
- Author and actress Gabourey Sidibe (“Empire,” “Precious”) recalls learning to love without shame in her powerful essay “Karma.”
- YA powerhouses John Green (The Fault in Our Stars) and Rainbow Rowell (Eleanor & Park) talk about writing epic—yet real—teen love in “Super Into a Person’s Person-ness”
- Florence Welch of the eponymous Florence and the Machine explores where art comes from in “Monster.”
- American-Nigerian poet Bassey Ikpi invokes Zora Neale Hurston in her poem “For Amy and Other Women Who Carry Chaos” one of several works throughout the anthology.
The range of contributions for Rookie on Love runs the gamut. Says Kirkus in their starred review, “Containing poetry, essays, interviews, graphic short stories, and fiction, covering doggie love, Arthurian love, and grandmother love, the book offers a niche of love that all women can connect to. A thoughtful, light read celebrating a universal emotion.” Whether it’s Valentine’s Day, Galentine’s Day, or any day of the week that you need some inspiration, Rookie on Love has it all.
