Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game By Michael Lewis Cover Image

Published: W. W. Norton & Company - March 17th, 2004

Baseball season is upon us! Take this opportunity to revisit Moneyball, which is a pretty riveting read, especially if you're a baseball fan and have only ever seen the movie. The book is significantly different -- more a set of vignettes that support an argument than a true narrative of the Oakland A's. I read this recently and loved it, less even for what the book says than for the monumental impact it has had on modern baseball after its publication. If you've ever wondered how we got to the god-awful place where baseball conversations became an endless string of abbreviations and percentages, look no further.

A wondrously thoughtful all-ages introduction to a powerfully imaginative artist and activist. On the Tip of a Wave perfectly illuminates Ai Weiwei's life, how he knew how it was to live “on the tip of a wave, far from home and always in danger,” and how that propelled him to use art to shed light on the international refugee crisis.

This is a really cool, fun and charming graphic coming-of-age of a young person trying to make her way through the zombie apocalypse! Apparently this takes place in the Walking Dead universe, but I had no idea about that when I started reading, and (since I have never watched/read anything else from that series) I think it holds up on its own. Book 2 comes out in October!

The Art of Fielding: A Novel By Chad Harbach Cover Image
$19.99
ISBN: 9780316126670
Availability: On Our Shelves Now
Published: Back Bay Books - May 1st, 2012

As we gear up for baseball season, I'm revisiting this great collegiate novel that revolves around a baseball team, tragic injury, youth, and love in many forms. I wouldn't say this is purely a baseball novel -- the plot revolves around the game, but does not exist solely within the game -- so even tangential fans of the sport can sink into its prose and characters, graceful and stumbling, fielding plays as they fly across the grass.

Carry On (Simon Snow Trilogy #1) By Rainbow Rowell Cover Image
$11.99
ISBN: 9781250135025
Availability: Not in Stock. Available to Order.
Published: Wednesday Books - May 9th, 2017

Like if Harry Potter hadn't been written by a TERF. At its surface, Carry On is an enemies-to-lovers magical romance and chosen one prophecy, but it’s so much more. The magic relies upon the meaning that the spells’ words carry in everyday life, which is absolutely brilliant and centers the power of language in this extremely fun and touching novel.

The Magic Fish: (A Graphic Novel) By Trung Le Nguyen Cover Image
$17.99
ISBN: 9781984851598

Published: Random House Graphic - October 13th, 2020

In this gorgeously illustrated graphic novel, Trung Le Nguyen weaves fables with the story of an immigrant family from Vietnam, using a fairy tale backdrop to relate a boy to his family’s history. Deals with culture, identity, and grief in complex ways, with storytelling as graceful as dance. Heartwarming and heartbreaking from its first panel to its last.

Beauty from a barstool without glorifying the grime. Dirtbag, Massachusetts is an unforgettable memoir of losing and finding oneself in the storm-tossed sea of American masculinity. Reading it is like picking up an hours-long conversation with a stranger at a bar, which is no mistake since Isaac Fitzgerald has made a habit of doing just that.

Heroes: The Greek Myths Reimagined By Stephen Fry Cover Image
$29.95
ISBN: 9781797201863
Availability: On Our Shelves Now
Published: Chronicle Books - June 2nd, 2020

For anyone fascinated by the Greek myths but feeling rudderless amidst a vast sea of choices, the Stephen Fry books are an excellent place to start. I love Heroes because it strikes a perfect, conversational balance between denser reads and that feeling of myths as campfire tales, told to you while looking up at the stars. While by no means comprehensive, Fry is an endlessly charming voice to guide a casual reader through this selection of Greek mythic heroes (Heracles, Perseus, Atalanta and Jason among them).
